Vale Sir Frank Moore

Legend of the Queensland and Australian tourism industry, Sir Frank Moore passed away on the 10 October 2024. The much revered and loved professional, mentor and colleague was widely renowned as the father of Queensland tourism. Sir Frank’s numerous contributions and leadership over the past four decades were instrumental in shaping the growth and direction of the tourism industry including his role in securing World Expo 88 in Brisbane and the establishment of the now Tourism and Events Queensland. He will be deeply missed.

Thorsborne Trail Enhancement Project

The Queensland Government, through the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation, is inviting suitably experienced tourism operators who wish to partner with the Traditional Owners of Hinchinbrook Island (Munamudanamy), the Bandjin people and Girramay people to submit a proposal to provide a four-day, three-night guided hiking tour along the world renowned Thorsborne Trail from Ramsay Bay to George Point. The successful candidate will have priority access to group camping areas for guided tours, separated from free and independent hikers. Applications close 15th November 2024.

Export Market Development Grants

Round four of the Austrade Export Market Development Grants will open for applications from representative bodies on 12 November 2024. The funding program provides grants to Australian small and medium enterprises and their representative bodies to market and promote their goods and services globally, as well as undertake export training. Successful applicants will receive grant agreements covering up to two financial years supporting planned expenditure from 2025–26 to 2026–27. Applications will close once funding is fully allocated.

Aboriginal Tourism Development Grant Program

Tourism Northern Territory is making a total $1.4 million available to expand Aboriginal cultural experiences and tourism product for park visitors. The Aboriginal Tourism Development in Northern Territory Parks and Reserves Grant Program will help Northern Territory owned and majority owned Aboriginal businesses and organisations to develop tourism product in 33 Northern Territory Joint Managed Parks; and to enable Aboriginal cultural experiences and tourism product for park visitors. Tourism for Rural Development Small Grants Program

UN Tourism and the TUI Care Foundation are inviting local artists and artisans in rural destinations across Africa to apply for the first-ever Tourism for Rural Development Small Grants Program. The Colourful Cultures initiative aims to empower rural destinations and enhance the benefits of tourism for local artists and artisans by progressing sustainable economic opportunities while safeguarding cultural heritage. Koala Airlines

A new domestic carrier has announced its intention to enter the commercial passenger aviation market in Australia by launching flights between yet-to-be-disclosed destinations using Boeing 737-8 Max aircraft. Melbourne-based Koala Airlines was founded in 2018, before buying Desert Air Safaris, a pioneering company in air tours and charter flights that had been operating for over 50 years throughout Australia, PNG and the Pacific Islands.

The enterprise also boasts a groundbreaking technology platform that seamlessly integrates a range of aviation business applications, enabling comprehensive automation and harnessing the full power of artificial intelligence.

Cabin Waste Audit

The International Air Transport Association has collaborated with the Aviation Sustainability Forum to launch a standardised audit program. The new Cabin Waste Composition Audit program aims to reduce cabin waste and has already been trialled covering 25 short, medium, and long-haul flights. Audit data will guide the airline industry and policy makers in their efforts to reduce the levels of waste produced and improve circularity by identifying opportunities for re-use and re-cycling.

Electric Byways

The state of Oregon is home to one of the largest networks of electric vehicle fast-charging stations in the United States and they have brought together the private sector, universities and public agencies to facilitate the placement of Electric Vehicle charging stations in key areas around the state. Travel Oregon has developed itineraries for the Oregon Electric Byway as between Electric Vehicle charging stations are scenic routes dotted with environmentally friendly businesses hotels, spas, wineries, breweries and restaurants.

UberSafari

Uber has partnered up with luxury safari specialist Aquila Collection to offer travellers the ability to book a half day safari in the Aquila Private Game Reserve near Cape Town in South Africa via the Uber App, 24 hours in advance. UberSafari follows on from the launch of UberBubbles in Paris, UberBalloon in Cappadocia and UberBoat in Mykonos. Every booking will also contribute to conservation efforts that help protect endangered species and ensure the preservation of South Africa’s rich biodiversity.

Inflatable Space Hotels

A space startup is developing high quality, high volume expandable space habitats to be used as extra accommodation ready to deploy in orbit. Funded by a range of private investors, the Max Space founders are two veteran entrepreneurs boasting over 40 years of work in the space industry including 25 years with NASA. The units they have been working on are packed for transport and inflate to once they reach low Earth orbit. The company has already developed a version which is booked for launch via a SpaceX rideshare in 2026.

Turtle Protection Promise

NRMA Parks and Resort has opened a new nature-based resort at Mon Repos Beach near Bundaberg in Queensland which aims to be an industry leader in wildlife-friendly design, environmental sustainability and guest accessibility while providing close-up encounters with Australia’s largest mainland population of nesting marine turtles. Guests at Turtle Sands will also make the Turtle Protection Promise including minimising the use of lights after dark, staying off the beach at night and avoiding nesting sites during turtle season (October-April). The $28 million ecotourism project involved three years of planning and consultation with National Parks and Wildlife Service, Bundaberg Regional Council, the Port Curtis Coral Coast group, and the Queensland State Government.

Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Under Canvas have announced a partnership which represents the first outdoor resort brand for the boutique hotel group. The Artemus Group has unveiled plans for the next stage of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct to redefine Brisbane’s waterfront experience in time for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics. Central to the proposal is a 77-room nine-storey boutique hotel complete with retail space, pool deck, theatre, and music hall. Set to align with Brisbane’s Buildings That Breathe guidelines, the revitalised precinct will offer locals and visitors enhanced public spaces, pathways, parklands, boardwalks, dining, entertainment, and riverfront experiences.

First Nations Tourism Report

The Australia Government has released a new report demonstrating the success and experiences of First Nations businesses involved in trade and international tourism. The First Nations Businesses Succeeding Internationally Report highlights the contribution First Nations exporters, importers and tourism businesses make to the community and creating jobs. This research is the first of its kind to use data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Supply Nation. It was developed in partnership with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Australian Trade and Investment Commission

The World Travel and Tourism Council have launched a landmark report showcasing the sector’s role in driving economic growth, particularly in remote regions, and its vital contribution for cultural preservation and community empowerment. Kingfisher Bay Resort on K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is launching a new light show experience in September 2024. Illumina is created by international light artist Bruce Ramus who is behind the famed Wintjiri Wiru at Uluru. The 20-minute ‘Return to Sky’ nighttime show will offer visitors a narrative that connects guests with the movement, texture, and colours of K’gari.

Cultural Heritage Tourism

Accor has signed a three-year partnership with World Monuments Fund to protect cultural heritage, strengthen local communities and curb overtourism. The partnership aims to distribute tourism flows by showcasing monuments and heritage places beyond traditional tourist hotspots. It will also help new destinations emerge through sustainable and responsible development of the travel sector. The collaboration will continue to unfold over the next three years with the first initiatives beginning in 2025.

Wangetti Trail

The first stage of the Wangetti Trail in Tropical North Queensland has officially opened with the new nearly eight-kilometre dual-use track running from Palm Cove Jetty to Ellis Beach for hikers and mountain bike riders of most ages and fitness levels. Traditional Owners have been involved in the project with up to 12 Caring for Country Officers employed directly for the protection of cultural heritage during construction. The full 94-kilometre trail is scheduled to be completed in 2026 spanning three national parks and a World Heritage area. The Queensland Government is funding the $47.1 million ecotourism project which includes an investment of $8 million from the Australian Government’s National Tourism Icons Program.

International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy applied to eligible international visitors to New Zealand has increased to NZ$100 (around AU$90) to help manage the country’s tourism impact and ensure higher-quality visitor experiences. Sustainable Travel Finland

Visit Finland has developed the Sustainable Travel Finland program for tourism companies and destinations to be able to respond to changing demand and future sustainable development. Companies and destinations need to meet the criteria of the seven-step program as well as have a third-party environmental certification to qualify for the label including taking actions to mitigate the harmful impact they could have on the planet, people and communities.

Sustainability Impact Report

A new Virtuoso report aims to create a database of sustainable practices that can be used to identify trends and insights from the luxury perspective. The Virtuoso Impact Report: Sustainable Travel 2024 explores the perceptions of sustainability among luxury travel and identifies opportunities to enhance support for travel advisors and travellers on their sustainable travel journeys. The survey saw responses from 482 Virtuoso partners from 70 counties, along with over 100 advisors from 14 countries.

American Express has released a report on the trends shaping the upcoming holiday season including consumers embracing travel and experiences over traditional gift-giving. The Amex Trendex report also indicates a rising trend in ‘me-cations’ or holidays focused on personal well-being, meaningful connections, and self-care. The online survey was conducted with consumers from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
